How to play Line of Four

Drop discs against a 12-rival ladder of computer opponents, from apprentice to legend. Every level, rivals think further ahead; early on, a threat marker shows the square where your rival would win. You get 2 hints; win with few discs and no hints for 3 stars. In 2-player mode (same device), two people share one screen and take turns dropping red and ivory discs; this mode has no AI and no hints. Scores and best scores are kept only when you play the computer.

You drop discs into columns to line up 4 in a row; the vertical board is 7 columns by 6 rows. When the game opens you get 2 choices: Vs computer, or 2 players on one device. In Vs computer mode you play 2 matches each against 6 rivals, from apprentice to legend.

Step by step

  1. You play with the red discs. Tap a column and your disc drops into its lowest empty slot. On the keyboard, the left/right arrows pick a column and Space drops it.
  2. Whoever lines up 4 discs first, horizontally, vertically or diagonally, wins. If the board fills up with no line of 4, the match ends in a draw; a draw doesn’t clear the level.
  3. In the first 4 matches, a threat marker flags the square where your rival would win on their next move. From then on, you have to spot the threat yourself.
  4. You get 2 hints. Win with no hints and at most 10 discs for 3 stars. In 2-player mode, the AI and hints are switched off.

Tips

  • The center column is part of the most possible lines of 4; drop your first discs close to the middle.
  • Build 2 separate winning threats at once and your rival can’t block both.
