How to play Knight’s Route

18 courses of knight-move puzzles, plus a Daily course. Collect the stars with the knight’s L-shaped move: in order on the first courses, then in any order you like. You choose the route. The board grows from 5×5 to 7×7, with rocks and cracked squares you can land on only once. Each course’s shortest route is found by a computer search and sets the target for 3 stars; go over the move limit or get the knight stuck and you lose the course.

Knight’s Route is a route puzzle played with a chess knight; there’s no rival, just you against the board. Over 18 courses the board grows from 5×5 to 7×7, and the number of stars to collect rises from 3 to 7.

Step by step

  1. The knight only moves in an L: 2 squares one way, then 1 square to the side. Squares it can reach show a dot; tap one, or pick it with the arrow keys and press Space.
  2. On the first 4 courses you collect the stars in the order of the numbers on them; from course 5 on, the order is free and rocks block the way.
  3. Course 11 adds cracked squares: you can stand on one once, and it breaks the moment you leave it.
  4. Run out of moves, or leave the knight with nowhere to go, and you lose the course. Finish in as many moves as the shortest route for 3 stars.

Tips

  • The knight can reach a corner square from only 2 squares; plan ahead where you’ll come from and where you’ll go after a corner star.
  • A single hint shows the next square and how many moves the shortest route has left, but caps your stars at 2.
  • Use a cracked square at a point you won’t need to cross again.
